Group RRSP Plans for Ontario Employers

A group RRSP lets employees save through a workplace arrangement, often with payroll contributions and an employer matching feature. The details affect both employee value and administration. Compare contribution design, provider costs and employee support before selecting a plan.

How a Group RRSP Works

A group RRSP is an arrangement involving employees' individual registered retirement savings plans. Participation and contribution rules are set within the program and applicable tax rules. Employees need to monitor their own contribution room; workplace contributions do not create unlimited additional room.

Setting Employer Matching and Eligibility

An employer can choose a matching formula subject to the program's rules. For illustration, a match up to 3% of eligible pay would produce a maximum $1,800 annual employer contribution for an employee earning $60,000, if all conditions are met. This is a design example, not a recommendation or provider quotation.

Payroll Contributions and Member Enrolment

Document eligibility dates, eligible earnings, payroll frequency and procedures for changing contribution elections. Reconcile payroll deductions and remittances. Make sure employees know how employer contributions affect their RRSP position and who to contact if their personal circumstances require a change.

Provider Fees, Investments and Employee Support

Review administrative charges, investment fees, available investments and the quality of member education. Ask how fees are presented and which services are included. Employee access to information and support should be assessed alongside the investment menu, not treated as an afterthought.

Group RRSP and DPSP Design Considerations

A DPSP may be paired with a group RRSP, but it has different rules. For example, DPSP employer contributions have their own vesting and contribution provisions. Do not apply a DPSP rule automatically to money in a group RRSP. Obtain a clear explanation of each account and its treatment when employment ends.
