Life, AD&D and Disability: Different Forms of Protection
Group life, accidental death and dismemberment, short-term disability and long-term disability are separate benefits. Check which are included and how each claim is defined. A plan can offer strong dental coverage while leaving an important income-protection gap; evaluate the components on their own terms.
Coverage Amounts, Waiting Periods and Definitions
Disability coverage uses contract definitions, waiting periods and benefit durations. Earnings definitions, monthly or weekly maximums and offsets affect what an employee may receive. Life coverage has its own amount, beneficiary and eligibility provisions. Do not assume the same rules apply to all benefits in the package.

Premium Contributions and Tax Treatment
Who pays disability premiums can affect the taxation of benefits received. Group life premiums also need appropriate payroll treatment. Structure contributions intentionally and document them. Have a payroll or tax professional review the arrangement rather than changing deductions solely to reduce the employer's immediate expense.
Coordination With Other Income Programs
Workplace injury compensation, public income programs and private disability coverage have different eligibility rules and purposes. Review potential coordination and offsets with the advisor. The existence of one program does not establish that an employee has equivalent protection for every illness or injury.
Claims Support and Coverage Transitions
Ask who handles claims, what information employees submit and how employer responsibilities are separated from medical adjudication. For a provider change, identify employees already absent or receiving disability benefits. Obtain case-specific confirmation before representing that all coverage will transfer unchanged.
Review Your Group Life and Disability Benefits
Share your existing benefit schedule or describe the protection you want to add. A licensed advisor can compare suitable life and disability options and explain material exclusions. GroupBenefitPlans.ca does not decide claims or provide insurance advice; it connects your business with the relevant professional.
