Group Life Insurance for Ontario Employers

Group life insurance provides a financial benefit to an eligible beneficiary when an insured employee dies, subject to the policy. It serves a different purpose from health reimbursement or disability income. An advisor can help employers assess suitable coverage and explain its limitations.

How Employee Group Life Coverage Works

The employer arranges coverage for an eligible employee group, and the contract defines when insurance begins and ends. Beneficiary information needs to be recorded accurately. Employees should receive clear information about their amount of insurance and any conditions that must be satisfied.

Flat Amounts and Earnings-Based Benefits

Coverage may use a flat amount or a multiple of earnings, with maximums and other conditions. Check how earnings are defined and whether bonuses or commissions are included. An earnings-based formula does not necessarily cover every employee for the same multiple of total compensation.

Dependent Life and Optional Life Insurance

Dependent or optional life coverage may be available under separate terms. Evidence of insurability can apply. Accidental death and dismemberment is another distinct benefit, based on specified accidental losses; it should not be described as a substitute for life insurance covering death under its broader contract terms.

Evidence of Insurability and Coverage Limits

A non-evidence limit may allow an amount of coverage without individual medical evidence, while additional insurance requires approval. Age-based reductions, actively-at-work conditions and exclusions can affect protection. Explain the approved amount rather than presenting the highest possible plan maximum as every employee's coverage.

Conversion and Coverage Changes When Employment Ends

Leaving employment can trigger coverage termination and time-sensitive conversion rights where available. The employer and advisor should provide accurate contract information promptly. Employees should not assume the group policy remains in place or that conversion requires no action.

Discuss Group Life Insurance Options

Discuss your employee classes, compensation structure and current protection with a licensed advisor. GroupBenefitPlans.ca makes the referral. Ask the advisor to explain premium taxation, beneficiary administration and how group life fits with employees' individual protection needs.

GroupBenefitPlans.ca is a referral and information service. Advice and coverage are provided by the licensed professional and relevant providers. An enquiry does not activate insurance.
