Green Shield Canada: What Employers Should Know

Who GreenShield is, in brief

According to its own website, GreenShield was founded in 1957 by William Wilkinson and is headquartered in Windsor, Ontario. It describes itself as a non-profit organization that reinvests its earnings to improve the health and well-being of Canadians, under a mission it calls "Better Health for All", and says it created North America's first prepaid drug plan. Its corporate structure, as published, includes Green Shield Association and Green Shield Holdings Inc., which houses businesses such as Green Shield Canada Insurance, Green Shield Health Inc., Green Shield Adjudication Inc. and Green Shield Administration Inc.

GreenShield also describes itself as Canada's first "payer-provider". In plain terms, that means it both pays for health benefits as an insurer and administrator, and delivers some health services directly, such as therapy, virtual care and pharmacy. In 2021, Green Shield Holdings announced it had acquired Inkblot Technologies, a virtual mental health platform.

GroupBenefitPlans.ca is not affiliated with Green Shield Canada or GreenShield, does not sell its products, and is not endorsed by it. This page summarizes publicly available information as of October 2026 so employers can ask better questions. Product details change, so always confirm current terms with a licensed advisor or directly with the insurer.

What GreenShield publicly offers employers

GreenShield's small business page, as of October 2026, says its small business offerings are for companies with 2 to 149 employees. It describes three broad product types, which line up with common ways Ontario employers structure benefits:

  • Health Care Spending Account (HCSA): the employer sets a budget, with no premiums, and employees choose how to use the funds on eligible expenses. Our page on health spending accounts explains how these work.
  • Administrative Services Only (ASO) plans: described as paying only for the benefits employees use, with protection from unexpectedly high claims. See ASO benefits plans for the basics.
  • Health and dental insurance plans: traditional insured coverage, with optional spending accounts.
  • Other features the page highlights include mental health counselling, telemedicine, an employee assistance program and pharmacy management services, and it notes that emergency medical travel coverage is included in its health and dental insurance plans.

Where GreenShield tends to focus

GreenShield's history is rooted in pharmacy, and its public materials emphasize drug, dental and extended health coverage, plus a growing set of health services. Its small business page does not describe group life or disability insurance as part of those offerings. Many employers want life, AD&D or disability coverage alongside health and dental, so if that matters to you, ask an advisor how a GreenShield health and dental plan would be paired with those benefits, and whether that adds complexity at renewal time.

GreenShield also offers personal (individual) insurance, according to its about page. That can matter for employees who leave a group plan or for business owners comparing options before they have a team. Our page on coverage after leaving a group plan covers the general picture.

The member experience day to day

For employees, a benefits plan is judged in small moments: getting reimbursed for new glasses, booking a therapist after a hard month, or refilling a prescription without a trip to the pharmacy. GreenShield promotes a platform called GreenShield+, available as a mobile app for iOS and Android. As of October 2026, its website describes features including:

  • Telemedicine with a Canadian-licensed health care professional
  • A digital pharmacy that delivers medication to the door, with a pharmacist available for questions
  • Matching with a therapist and access to an online cognitive behavioural therapy program
  • Claims reimbursement that GreenShield says draws on all the funding sources a plan provides, with no paperwork
  • Provider search, benefits coverage checks, eyewear and contact lens access, and chronic care support

How to evaluate GreenShield against other insurers

No insurer is the right fit for every employer. The best way to judge GreenShield is the same way you would judge any carrier: compare like-for-like quotes and read the plan details, not just the brochure. Our guide on how to compare group benefits quotes goes deeper, and the compare providers page explains what a side-by-side review should look at.

Things worth comparing include:

  • Premiums for each benefit, and how renewal increases are calculated
  • Coverage levels: coinsurance, annual maximums, paramedical limits and drug plan design
  • Which services are included versus offered as add-ons (for example virtual care, therapy or an EAP)
  • How health and dental coverage would sit alongside any life or disability benefits you want
  • Spending account flexibility, and whether an HCSA, ASO or insured plan suits your budget and team size
  • Claim turnaround, digital tools and how easy it is for employees to get help

Questions to ask a licensed benefits advisor

A good advisor should be able to explain how a GreenShield quote compares with other insurers for a business like yours, and why. Questions worth raising:

  • Is my business eligible, and are there participation or contribution requirements for a group our size?
  • Which benefits in this quote are insured, which are self-funded, and which are spending accounts?
  • What is included in the GreenShield+ experience for my employees, and is anything extra cost?
  • How would life and disability coverage be arranged alongside this plan?
  • What happened at renewal for similar small employers, and what drives increases?
  • How are employees who live or work outside Ontario handled?
